چکیده
The Internet has been a remarkable success, yet in many ways it is woefully inadequate in meeting the needs of applications and users. Its performance is unpredictable, it is frequently unavailable when we need it, and it does not easily support new technologies such as wireless or evolve with changing needs of users and applications. There are applications we would not think of running on it, such as a remote health monitoring and diagnostic service which requires location awareness, ubiquitous and seamless connectivity, and high availability while being able to support a large number of devices. The focus of my research is to make networks more adaptable, evolvable, self-managed, and cost-efficient, as well as improve their performance so as to make these applications feasible. While my primary goal is to innovate and build practical solutions, I also enjoy the approach of using theoretical tools wherever applicable. My current work is on designing a novel congestion control algorithm for the Internet that is appreciably better than the widely used TCP. I describe this work below followed by my ideas for future research. A lot of my work has immensely benefited through collaboration with my colleagues.

Research Impacting the Practice of Congestion Control
Many algorithms proposed in networking research papers are widely used in many areas, including Congestion Control, Routing, Traffic Engineering, and Load Balancing. In this paper, we present algorithmic advancements that have impacted the practice of Congestion Control (CC) in datacenters and the Internet. Where possible, we also describe negative examples, ideas that looked promising on paper...
متن کاملOptimal Call Admission Control in Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) Schedulers
Generalized Processor Sharing(GPS) is an idealized fluid discipline with a number of desirable properties. Its packetized version PGPS is considered to be a good choice as a packet scheduling discipline to guarantee Quality-of-Service in IP and ATM networks. The existing Connection Admission Control(CAC) frameworks for GPS result in a conservative resource allocation. We propose an Optimal CAC ...
متن کاملTypical versus Worst Case Design in Networking
Networking research has a strong inclination toward designing systems for the worst case scenarios. On the face of it, this seems reasonable – designing for the worst case gives strong guarantees on the system. However, this often comes with a sacrifice for the typical case performance. Drawing from our experience, this paper argues and gives evidence of the enormous benefits of typical case de...
متن کاملWhy Flow-Completion Time is the Right metric for Congestion Control and why this means we need new algorithms
Users typically want their flows to complete as quickly as possible: They want a web-page to download quickly, or a file transfer to complete as rapidly as possible. In other words, Flow Completion Time (FCT) is an important arguably the most important performance metric for the user. Yet research on congestion control focuses almost entirely on maximizing flow throughput, link utilization and ...
متن کاملOptimising prescribing in primary care: an evaluation of financial and clinical parameters
Problem statement The research carried out aimed to encourage evidencebased cost-effective pharmaceutical prescribing, reduce medicine related adverse reactions, improve patient quality of life and reduce pharmaceutical wastage. Prescribing data was evaluated and interventions were subsequently developed in an attempt to improve pharmaceutical prescribing by General Practitioners (GPs) across a...
